Organ models

The Nord Organ 3 features meticulously crafted emulations of iconic tonewheel and transistor organs with hands-on controls. Each model is the result of detailed analysis of carefully selected vintage instruments, capturing every nuance of the legendary organ sounds.

B3

The B3 model features three different tone wheel modes ranging from the clean sound of a factory new unit to a road worn vintage character with increased tone wheel cross talk and leakage.

Key Click is an important characteristic of the B3 sound and is recreated in great detail on the Nord Organ 3. The three options are selectable from the panel and allows for quick fine tuning of the Key Click level.

The B3 Percussion effect includes a Poly mode, which enables polyphonic use of the Percussion even when holding chords or playing legato. The DB9 Cancel setting allows for deactivating the 9th drawbar when Percussion is turned on, as on the original instrument.

Vox

The iconic sound of the Vox organ has been refined even further for the Nord Organ 3, with revamped waveform shapes and filters as well as updates to both the key click and vibrato character.

Farfisa

The new generation Farfisa model conveys the character of the original tone generators and filters with great precision, including the complex filter interactions when combining registers.

Soft B3 and Pipe

The Soft B3 model is based on the B3 tone wheel organ, but without the key click and other artifacts, for a softer and more mellow sound. The Pipe model faithfully recreates a set of principal pipe organ ranks; the metal pipe registers that commonly make up the foundational sound of a pipe organ. The Pipe organ chorus mode switches to a model tuned with less precision, adding further realism to the sound.

Vibrato and Chorus Scanner

Reworked from the ground up, the new vibrato and chorus captures the unique qualities of the original instruments, offering either the gentle character of a ’50s B3 chorus scanner or the deep modulation of a ’70s instrument.

Bass Models

The Bass Model section of the Nord Organ 3 provides matching bass models for all the organ types and includes a range of classic synth bass sounds, greatly expanding the sonic possibilities of the instrument. The bass can optionally be routed to a dedicated audio output, for separate treatment of organ and bass manuals on stage or in the studio.

Rotary Speaker emulation

With a brand new approach to recreating not only the classic rotary sound, but also the characteristics of both the amp and speakers, the Nord Organ 3 features an exceptional Rotary Speaker emulation with multiple microphone perspectives.

Choose from three distinct Drive types capturing the various aspects of Rotary Speaker overdrive with a great deal of nuance and variation.

Rotor speed and acceleration rates can be customized and the Sound menu offers a wide range of settings enabling even more detailed and nuanced sound shaping.

The Fixed Stop Angle feature allows fine tuning of the exact stop position of the rotary horn.

Microphone perspectives

The Nord Organ 3 offers several microphone positioning options corresponding to popular ways of reproducing the classic rotary speaker sound, both on stage and in the studio. These variations in microphone placement affect both the perceived movement as well as the tonal character of the rotary speaker, ranging from punchy and present to smooth and open.

Close microphone placement gives a direct and detailed tone, while adding more distance slightly softens the treble and adds body. With microphones placed further apart, for example on the corner or even opposite sides of the cabinet, the sense of rotation becomes more apparent, creating a rich, immersive stereo image. In contrast, a tight microphone placement creates a highly focused sound with a narrower stereo field. In addition, the bass rotor has a wide setting for low end stereo effect.

Reverb and Delay

The Reverb section features 6 different types including a brand new Spring Reverb as well as Booth, Room, Stage, Hall and Cathedral options.

The Pre-Rotary setting allows the reverb to be placed before the Rotary Speaker, like a reverb equipped organ connected to a Rotary Speaker. With Pre-Rotary turned off, the reverb is placed after the Rotary Speaker emulating a room or other ambient environment.

The Delay Effect includes a vintage-style Analog mode as well as three different feedback filters for creative shaping of the delay feedback tail. Optionally, the delay can be set to Upper Manual only.

Modulation effects

The Modulation effects include classics such as Chorus, Phaser and Flanger – all modeled on legendary hardware units – as well as Ring Modulation for a variety of creative and experimental sounds and a versatile Tremolo effect. The Modulation effect can be assigned to the upper manual only, keeping the lower and pedal manuals clean.

About Nord

About Nord

Clavia Digital Musical Instruments (Clavia DMI AB) is a Swedish manufacturer of virtual analog synthesizers, virtual electromechanical pianos and stage pianos, founded in Stockholm, Sweden in 1983 by Hans Nordelius and Mikael Carlsson. Since 1995, Clavia’s keyboards have been branded Nord.

In 1995, Clavia released the Nord Lead. Called “a magic piece of electronics” by Sound on Sound it popularized the virtual analog type of synthesis. In 1997 the Nord Lead 2 was released, with many improvements, including increasing polyphony from 4 to 16 notes. The Nord Lead 3 was released in 2001, with a reworked sound engine, better D/A converters and monophonic aftertouch. The most striking aspect of the Nord Lead 3 was that all the sound editing knobs had been replaced with infinite rotary knobs, where the value of the parameter was indicated by a LED ‘collar’ around the knob. The rotary knobs, LED collars and keyboard with aftertouch made the Nord Lead 3 an “absolute delight” but because of its higher price, the Nord Lead 2 remained in demand. And as some of the parts of the Nord Lead 3 were getting harder to source, Clavia released an updated version of the Nord Lead 2, called the Nord Lead 2x, with faster processors, better D/A converters and an upgraded polyphony to 20 voices. The Nord Lead 3 was discontinued in 2007, but the Nord Lead 2x remains in production.

In 1997 Clavia released the Nord Modular, a virtual analog modular synthesizer. Called a “landmark in synthesis” it allowed you to essentially build your own virtual analog synthesizer. It too was later upgraded with the 2004 release of the Nord Modular G2, that gave it the same endless rotary knobs as the Nord Lead 3 and a larger keyboard with aftertouch.

Nord Electro2
In 2001 the Nord Electro was released. It was designed to emulate the classical electromechanical keyboards like the Hammond organ, the Rhodes Stage 73, the Wurlitzer electric piano and the Hohner Clavinet. The pianos are samples but the organs are modeled using a “digital simulation”.

Im 2005, Clavia produced the Nord Stage, combining the organ and piano functions of the Electro with some of the synth functionality of the Lead, while adding other piano functionality and a version with 88 weighted keys.

In October 2007 Clavia released the Nord Wave, which adds sample-player functionality to the virtual analog engine of the Nord Lead series and in March 2012 Clavia released the Nord Drum, a virtual analog drum synthesizer. and the Nord C1 Organ, a dual manual instrument containing the organ section from the Nord Electro 3, to which an emulation of a baroque pipe organ was added in 2009.

Nord Lead A1

Nord Lead 4
The Nord Piano was released in 2010, which contained the piano section from the Nord Electro 3 with an 88 key hammer action keyboard.

Clavia has continued to update each of these models, and in 2020 the Nord range included the Nord Stage 3, the Nord Piano 4, the Nord Electro 6, the Nord Lead 4, the Nord Lead A1 and the Nord Wave 2.
In 1983, Hans Nordelius and Mikael Carlsson began to work in the basement of a home located in the southern suburbs of Stockholm, creating the world’s first dedicated digital drum for the commercial market, called the ‘Digital Percussion Plate 1’. In 1984 an improved version that could play four sounds from an EPROM was released under the ‘ddrum’ name with the now signature red coloring. The same year a drum system was released with several sound modules in a rack, each with its own EPROM. The pads used to trigger the sounds were unusual for the time, since they used real drum heads, whereas other electronic drum kits of the time used rubber pads. This, together with a separate trigger for the snare drum’s rim, made for a more realistic playing experience. The ddrum brand and products were sold in 2005 to their US distributor Armadillo who continues to manufacture drum products under the name.
