Two independent Pianos and Sample Synths

NP5 Program%20Section

The Piano and Sample Synth sections of the Nord Piano 5 each contain two independent Layers. The two Pianos and two Sample Synths can be used simultaneously in a variety of split or Layer configurations. Combined with the versatile effects routing, a wide range of combinations can be achieved – from classic ensemble settings to rich soundscapes. The LED equipped Level controls allow for quick and precise balancing of all Layer volume levels. A Volume Pedal and/or Sustain Pedal can be assigned to each Layer.

Live focused design

The Nord Piano 5 has dedicated dials and buttons for full hands-on control during a live performance. Transposing, setting up a split point or creating a layered sound can be accomplished instantly.

Seamless Transitions

The Nord Piano 5 features seamless transitions for glitch free changing of sounds or programs while playing.

Our exclusive Nord Piano Library is regularly updated with new unique world class sounds, and always free of charge. All sounds are easily replaced using the Nord Sound Manager.

THE NORD PIANO EXPERIENCE

NP5 Hands square

Virtual Hammer Action Technology

VirtualHammerAction logo2

Our unique Virtual Hammer Action Technology in conjunction with the physical hammer movements delivers outstanding authenticity and dynamic response resulting in a keyboard action that handles dynamic playing with amazing control at any velocity level.  The Triple Sensor keybed also provides authentic features like repeating a note without lifting the key completely to ensure the smooth repetitions and fluent transitions associated with an acoustic Grand Piano.

Triple Sensor Keybed

The triple sensor keybed has added weight for improved dynamic control providing authentic Piano touch and feel. Each individual keybed is meticulously calibrated at the Nord factory to ensure an even response over the whole range.

Advanced String Resonance

Our unique Advanced String Resonance accurately reproduces the complex interplay of the piano strings and also adds the rich ambience of a real piano when playing with the pedal down.

Nord Triple Pedal with Dynamic Pedal Noise

The Nord Triple Pedal includes Soft and Sostenuto Pedals in addition to a unique Dynamic Sustain Pedal. The Triple Pedal also enables our Pedal Noise feature that dynamically simulates the mechanical sounds of lifting and releasing the damper mechanism.

Creative Piano Filters

The dedicated piano filters provide an additional level of sonic control, accentuating softness, mid or brilliance for the acoustic uprights and grands. The electric pianos have tailored filters that even include emulations of the legendary Dyno preamp.

Dynamic Compression

The new Dynamic Compression feature balances the sound level without altering the character of the piano sound.

Soft Release

A Soft Release-mode adds a slightly longer release, more suitable for legato playing, emulating a looser damper tension in an acoustic or an electromechanical instrument.

Keyboard Touch

Three KB Touch options are available to suit your playing style, from heavy to light.

SAMPLE SYNTH SECTION

NP5 revB samplesynth angle

Two brand new independent Sample Synths with greatly expanded memory and a host of new sounds.

The Sample Synth Section is based on an entirely new format and contains a wide range of entirely new sounds, such as solo wind, solo brass, solo strings, basses, guitars plus a vast collection of classic analog leads and basses. Included is also a selection of samples from the Symphobia and Swing! libraries by ProjectSAM. All sounds can be quickly replaced using the Nord Sound Manager . You can also create your own sample instruments using the unique free Nord Sample Editor software for Mac and Windows.

The Sample Synth section provides two fully-featured and independent Layers and is equipped with intuitive controls for attack, decay/release and dynamic velocity response. The new Soft and Bright Timbre settings provide a quick way of shaping the tone of the sound.

Unison, Tru-Vibrato and more

The new sample format in the Piano 5 offers several exciting new features. Unison creatively blends several sample voices for rich, ensemble-like sounds, “Tru-Vibrato” accurately models the unique vibrato characteristics of a wide variety of wind, brass and string instruments and round robin allows natural sounding fast repetitions. Vibrato is assignable to button, pedal or one of the preset delay settings. The Sample Synth section also features Mono and Legato modes with adjustable Glide rate.

EFFECT SECTION

Wah-wah and Ring Modulator. All these can be controlled with a Control Pedal.
Mod 2 – Phaser, Flanger, Chorus, Vibe effect and two selectable depths for each effect.
Delay – Stereo delay effect with Tap Tempo button and Ping Pong mode. The Delay can be assigned globally to all four Layers.
Equalizer – Three band EQ, with sweepable mid. The EQ can be assigned globally to all four Layers.
Compressor/Amp – Twin, JC, Small, Compressor and a Tube Overdrive effect.
Reverb section with five different sizes (Booth, Room, Stage, Hall and Cathedral) for adding ambience to your sounds. The Bright and Dark modes allows for enhanced or reduced treble. The new Chorale option adds a lush modulation effect.

Control Pedal

Connect an optional expression pedal for hands free control of volume and effects.

Monitor Input

Connect a second Nord keyboard or any other audio source to the rear panel Monitor Input and play along a track without worrying about an external mixer or a sound system. The signal is routed to the main outputs and the headphones output.

About Nord

About Nord

Clavia Digital Musical Instruments (Clavia DMI AB) is a Swedish manufacturer of virtual analog synthesizers, virtual electromechanical pianos and stage pianos, founded in Stockholm, Sweden in 1983 by Hans Nordelius and Mikael Carlsson. Since 1995, Clavia’s keyboards have been branded Nord.

In 1995, Clavia released the Nord Lead. Called “a magic piece of electronics” by Sound on Sound it popularized the virtual analog type of synthesis. In 1997 the Nord Lead 2 was released, with many improvements, including increasing polyphony from 4 to 16 notes. The Nord Lead 3 was released in 2001, with a reworked sound engine, better D/A converters and monophonic aftertouch. The most striking aspect of the Nord Lead 3 was that all the sound editing knobs had been replaced with infinite rotary knobs, where the value of the parameter was indicated by a LED ‘collar’ around the knob. The rotary knobs, LED collars and keyboard with aftertouch made the Nord Lead 3 an “absolute delight” but because of its higher price, the Nord Lead 2 remained in demand. And as some of the parts of the Nord Lead 3 were getting harder to source, Clavia released an updated version of the Nord Lead 2, called the Nord Lead 2x, with faster processors, better D/A converters and an upgraded polyphony to 20 voices. The Nord Lead 3 was discontinued in 2007, but the Nord Lead 2x remains in production.

In 1997 Clavia released the Nord Modular, a virtual analog modular synthesizer. Called a “landmark in synthesis” it allowed you to essentially build your own virtual analog synthesizer. It too was later upgraded with the 2004 release of the Nord Modular G2, that gave it the same endless rotary knobs as the Nord Lead 3 and a larger keyboard with aftertouch.

Nord Electro2
In 2001 the Nord Electro was released. It was designed to emulate the classical electromechanical keyboards like the Hammond organ, the Rhodes Stage 73, the Wurlitzer electric piano and the Hohner Clavinet. The pianos are samples but the organs are modeled using a “digital simulation”.

Im 2005, Clavia produced the Nord Stage, combining the organ and piano functions of the Electro with some of the synth functionality of the Lead, while adding other piano functionality and a version with 88 weighted keys.

In October 2007 Clavia released the Nord Wave, which adds sample-player functionality to the virtual analog engine of the Nord Lead series and in March 2012 Clavia released the Nord Drum, a virtual analog drum synthesizer. and the Nord C1 Organ, a dual manual instrument containing the organ section from the Nord Electro 3, to which an emulation of a baroque pipe organ was added in 2009.

Nord Lead A1

Nord Lead 4
The Nord Piano was released in 2010, which contained the piano section from the Nord Electro 3 with an 88 key hammer action keyboard.

Clavia has continued to update each of these models, and in 2020 the Nord range included the Nord Stage 3, the Nord Piano 4, the Nord Electro 6, the Nord Lead 4, the Nord Lead A1 and the Nord Wave 2.
In 1983, Hans Nordelius and Mikael Carlsson began to work in the basement of a home located in the southern suburbs of Stockholm, creating the world’s first dedicated digital drum for the commercial market, called the ‘Digital Percussion Plate 1’. In 1984 an improved version that could play four sounds from an EPROM was released under the ‘ddrum’ name with the now signature red coloring. The same year a drum system was released with several sound modules in a rack, each with its own EPROM. The pads used to trigger the sounds were unusual for the time, since they used real drum heads, whereas other electronic drum kits of the time used rubber pads. This, together with a separate trigger for the snare drum’s rim, made for a more realistic playing experience. The ddrum brand and products were sold in 2005 to their US distributor Armadillo who continues to manufacture drum products under the name.
