Unlike other guitar brands, crates of Danelectro guitars are made of masonite panels attached to a wooden frame. The body is thus hollow, which makes them very light instruments. The necks are usually made with conventional wood such as maple, and rosewood for the fingerboard. The "lipstick" Pickups, characterized by their cylindrical chrome covers, invented by Danelectro, are used on all their guitars. They are often wired in series instead of the traditional parallel wiring, which gives a humbucker type sound canceling background noise when the selector is in center position. Both aspects Danelectro guitars give a particular sound, very clear, with relatively little sustain. This type of sound often gets used to surf music, rockabilly or grunge.
